2008 News ArchiveIn December 2008, Meyers, Harrison & Pia, LLC held a holiday drive for the Columbus House of New Haven. The Columbus House is an organization that helps the area's homeless population by providing shelter and basic necessities to those who need them most. We collected warm clothing, sheets, comforters, pillows, toiletries, and many other sorely needed items. Click here for a picture of some of our donations. Joseph A. DeCusati, CPA, ASA, CFE was quoted in "A Taxing Matter: Foreclosures May Impact IRS Filings" in the New Haven Register on December 15, 2008. On December 8, 2008, Mark I. Harrison, CPA, ABV, Esq. delivered a presentation to the Connecticut Chapter of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers on "Business Valuations in a Distressed Economy." Kenneth J. Pia, Jr., CPA, ABV, ASA, CBA was recently a speaker at two seminars on the valuation aspects of ESOPs. On November 18, 2008, Ken spoke at a New York State Bar Association seminar on "The Sale of Stock in a Closely-Held Business to an "ESOP" (Employee Stock Ownership Plan): A Diversification Strategy for Business Owners" at the Hotel Pennsylvania in New York City. On November 20, 2008, Ken spoke to CPAs and other financial professionals at a seminar sponsored by Smith Barney, at the Citigroup Center in New York City. Meyers, Harrison & Pia, LLC has been voted the Best Valuation Firm in the Connecticut Law Tribune Readers' Poll for the fourth year in a row, as well as Best Forensic Accounting Firm. Heather M. Young has been selected as a recipient of the 2008 Candidate's Award from the Connecticut Society of Certified Public Accountants. The Candidate's Awards are individual scholarships of $3,000 that assist candidates in satisfying the 150-hour requirement of the Connecticut State Board of Accountancy. Teresa M. Torres has joined our firm as a staff accountant. Randy L. Harrison, CPA, CITP was quoted in "If You Can't Take the Heat" in the New Haven Register on September 22, 2008. The article discussed ways to cut utility bills. Min K. Kim, MBA recently passed the Level III exam for the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) program. Kenneth J. Pia, Jr., CPA, ABV, ASA, CBA was a speaker at a National Business Institute seminar on "Effectively Using Experts in Family Law", held on August 15, 2008 in North Haven, CT. Meyers, Harrison & Pia, LLC is pleased to announce the opening of a new office located at 143 Sound Beach Avenue, Greenwich, Connecticut. This office will enable us to better serve our lower Fairfield County clientele. Randy L. Harrison, CPA has earned the Certified Information Technology Professional (CITP) credential from the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. The CITP credential recognizes CPAs for their technology expertise and unique ability to bridge the gap between business and technology. Randy is one of only 17 CPAs in the State of Connecticut and 55 throughout New England to earn the credential. On Thursday, June 26, 2008, the entire team at MHP participated in The Incredible Race, a fun and challenging team building event loosely based on the television show The Amazing Race. Joe discussed sorting out finances in a remarriage. Kenneth J. Pia, Jr., CPA, ABV, ASA, CBA has been reappointed to the Connecticut Society of Certified Public Accountants' Advisory Council for the 2008-2009 term. Ken recently served as a member of the Advisory Council for the 2007-2008 term. On May 7, 2008, Michele A. Spence, CPA presented a tax seminar to twelve real estate agents that work for Sterling Realtors of Middletown, CT. On April 22, 2008, Meyers, Harrison & Pia, LLC held a seminar at the New Haven Lawn Club for matrimonial attorneys on "Business Valuation and Forensic Accounting Issues in Divorce." Randy L. Harrison, CPA was featured in the New Haven Register's weekly "Tax Tips" video series on www.nhregister.com. Randy's video highlighted last-minute tax filing issues. Randy L. Harrison, CPA was quoted in "The Loan Ranger: Shopping Around for the Right Mortgage" in the New Haven Register on March 31, 2008.
